Writer's Challenge for Thanksgiving

Lori E has posted a Writer's challenge for Thanksgiving.

The Nicest Thing Anyone Has Ever Done for Me
I am lucky to be blessed with many friends who are always doing nice things for each other, but my first thought for this topic was my neighbor, Molly.

We have known Molly and her husband for over 30 years, when they welcomed us as neighbors after we purchased our land across the road from their farm. This being a rural area, of mostly Ukrainian origin, food and congenial hospitality are important parts of social interactions.

The "nicest thing" that Molly did (and keeps on doing, like the Energizer Bunny) is to feed us. When we are working in the greenhouse we often receive "surprise" food prepared by Molly. When I thank her, she always says, "Oh, it's just leftovers". When she pops over for coffee, so I can help with her knitting or crocheting, she always brings the homemade goodies. No-one makes peroghies or holubtsi (cabbage rolls) or paska or kuffles like our Molly.

The amazing thing is that she seems to sense just when we need her offerings the most. It's not about not having food in the house, it's about getting too busy to take the time. And it's about a friend who is there just at the right moment.

  1. When we feed others it is the most basic yet important gift. Need is not always a lack of food but like you said just a lack of time and energy. This is especially nice to read about on our Thanksgiving weekend when many of us are feeding others in our homes.
It sounds like Molly is a treasure to have as a neighbour but she must also think that you guys are a treasure too.
Thanks so much for joining in my Writer's Challenge. My heart is so full from reading all of the different stories.

  2. I agree with Lori, feeding someone is an act of love. Molly sounds like she was is a guardian angel!

  3. How sweet Molly is and how special she is to sense just when you need the sort of uplift that good, old fashioned comfort food can bring. And in return, I am sure Molly appreciates the time you spend with her knitting.

So many of the stories I have read today in Lori's challenge involve food. At a time in this country when families are having to scrape to get food on the table, it inspires me to do something. And I will.

Your post and the writing of it is excellent!!

    xoxo

  4. What a wonderful story. It really is true that food is nourishing not just to the body, but the giving of food is nourishing to our souls. Your Molly sounds like such a sweet, generous soul. It's a blessing to have friends and neighbors like her. Kathy
